The t-shirt says, “I Love NY.” It must be true. Over 8 million people live in New York City and more than 40 million visitors come to the Big Apple every year. While the city is a feast of fascinating attractions and activities and diverse cultures, cuisines and characters, it can be overwhelming. Like the nickname, think of New York City as an apple. Manhattan is the core and the four boroughs of The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island make up the whole.
Manhattan is also divided into three geographic areas. Uptown refers to the Upper East and Upper West Sides offering easy access to Central Park, Museum Mile, Rose Center for Earth and Space and Lincoln Center. Midtown is home to attractions such as: Times Square, Broadway, Radio City Music Hall, the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center and Grand Central Station. City Hall, Seaport Village, the Financial District, Brooklyn Bridge, ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and former site of the World Trade Center are located Downtown.
Getting around New York City is not difficult when you know the ropes. Most visitors marvel at the city’s sea of Yellow Cabs. New York City also offers excellent public transportation. Purchase a Metro Card for inexpensive bus and subway transit 24-hours a day. And, slip into a pair of comfortable walking shoes and grab a New York City travel guide. One of the best ways to experience city neighborhoods is on foot stopping along the way for everything from a quick bagel snack to gourmet dining at New York City restaurants.
